Bhumisparsh
Mudra represents the moment of Siddhartha's enlightenment. Just
before his enlightenment, Siddhartha was attacked by the daemon
Mara and his army of monsters as he sat under the Bodhi tree.
Siddhartha didn’t move and then Mara claimed the enlightenment for
himself asserting that his spiritual accomplishments were greater
than Siddhartha’s. Mara’s monsters yelled in unison to bear
witness to Mara’s claim to enlightenment. Then Siddhartha touched
the earth to make her the witness of his enlightenment. The earth
roared back declaring that she bore witness to Siddhartha’s
enlightenment. Mara disappeared and with the morning star rising
in the sky, the enlightened Siddhartha became a Buddha.
